Sales and Trade-Ins from Previous iPhone Launches

As the release of the iPhone 6 approaches, consumers are preparing to trade-in their old iPhones just in time for an upgrade. Because the iPhone 6 is a new form factor, NextWorth expects to see twice as much trade-in volume on in comparison to the launches of the 2013 iPhone 5s/5c. Below is a look at how the past sales figures compare to trade-ins at NextWorth.

In 2011, the iPhone 4s sold approximately 4 million units in its first weekend. In its first weekend in 2012, the iPhone 5 sold nearly 5 million units. Last year, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c combined to sell 9 million units in the first weekend. The steady increase of first weekend sales each year suggests that the iPhone 6 and its numerous upgrades could expect a big first weekend, potentially reaching 10 million units.

As far as trade-ins go, historical results show a 105% increase in trades when Apple introduces a new form factor, compared a much smaller change when they introduced an “S” version. The visual below shows NextWorth’s trade-in volumes during the previous launches, and the estimated trade-in expectation for the upcoming iPhone 6 release.

Historical Trade-in Volume

Although there is not a noticeable correlation between the sales and trade-ins of previous iPhones, both numbers have increased since the iPhone 4s in 2011. With dramatic changes rumored with the iPhone 6 release, expectations are at an all-time high for sales and trade-ins over the next month.

Preparing for the iPhone 6 launch

For anyone who loves the iPhone, this is one of the most exciting times of the year. As September quickly approaches, the release of the iPhone 6 is right around the corner. With anticipation building, it is important to know what is in store for the new iPhone. Although official announcements are not expected until September 9, here is everything we know about the iPhone 6 so far:

New features

As with every new iPhone that is released, the iPhone 6 is expected to have a faster processor and some upgrades to the camera. However, the biggest change expected with the iPhone 6 is screen size.

The iPhone 5S, the most recent model available, has a 4-inch screen. To improve upon this, the expectation is that two phones will be released; one with a 4.7 inch screen, and one with a 5.5 inch screen. This would be a drastic change for the iPhone, one that would likely generate a lot of interest.

In addition to a larger screen, rumors suggest that we should expect some other major new features on the iPhone 6. Among those are a new screen made from sapphire, which would essentially be scratch-proof. There is also the possibility for wireless charging capabilities and extended battery life in the iPhone 6.

Release date

Although Apple has yet to confirm an official release date for the iPhone 6, the latest reports indicate that the release will happen on September 9. It is still unclear if Apple will release two different sizes at the same time, or if the 5.5 inch phone will come at a later date.

In September 2013, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, Apple’s discount smartphone, sold a combined 9 million units. Neither of these phones offered any significant upgrades from the previous model, so expectations are that the iPhone 6 will easily surpass those first weekend sales.

With the release of the iPhone 6 coming soon, now is a great time to prepare.
